Playing Catch-Up

I see we are all feeling guilty we are not on track. As a full-time children's librarian, like many of you, my August is finishing up SRP and getting reports done plus planning September Library Card Sign-Up Month. My free time was filled family events & weddings. These are my excuses, how about you?

I'm also wondering about our job responsibilities. Maybe now it's happening or shortly in the future there will be online media children's librarians along with the 'traditional' inhouse ones like myself. It seems like we are trying to be a bit of both right now and it may be best to have both kinds no matter what the size a library is.

Skill #7 Wiki
Browsed through ChildLit Wiki with a Book Recommendation Engine.

Skill #8 Firefox Add-on: Reference Desk to Deeper Web
I practiced the 'quick tutorial' and learned alot of new terms: Tag cloud [terms], sites cloud [websites], Phrases cloud, & Zones cloud[.gov & .org[, plus Zoomies [min-search engines].

Skill # 9 Add Image to Blog-this post!

Skill #10 Online Image Generator: Image Generator .org

http://www.fototrix.com/framer/
This could be fun for ongoing programs where the same kids attend regularly or casual staff meetings.

Skill #11 Tag Photos
I tagged the same blog photo to Delicious acct.

Skill #12 Twitter & Facebook [already done this previously]
Presently our library does not have social media accts. as we still have a traditional website that we can't add content too.

Skill #13 ALA Connect
I am a Lifetime Member and needed to get into this section. I joined the committee-ALSC Children's Books Discussion Group which has 73 members but only K. Horning's post in 2009. I am in the divisions-PLA & ALSC and did the email subscriptions. In my mind I want to get more active since I have 2 years under my belt now and have come out of my 'Newbie Fog."

Skill #14 Goodreads & Library Thing [already on them]
But I checked in again and found new 'friends'

Skill #15 Chat online [done years ago but not recently]
AIM-cell phone and Meebo-chat rooms

Skill #16 Podcast:
Great one on this topic-21C Skills Movement on AL Direct-August 11 from Marsha Semmel.

Skill #17 Online Webinar
I just attended the Booklist Youth Fiction for Fall recently. These are free, sign-up even if you can't do it live because you will get the archive version to view later. I'm about 50/50 live vs. archive viewing.

Skill #18 YouTube and Vimeo
There's also a SchoolTube one I've played with. I watch Youtube on my iphone regularly and checked out Vimeo. Watched the Seventh Movement, with nice music, a time lapse about the Eiffel Tower.

Skill #19 Book Trailers.net
Fun-I didn't know about this. I watched the Immaculate Complexion by Edie Bloom [May 2007]. The trailer created in a graphic novel style with a British accent female voiceover.

Skill #20 GoogleDocs, Remember the Milk and Zoho Writer
I've rec'd Google Docs for Storytime info from Pubyac. I glanced at 'Remember the Milk and will check that out further as it has iphone apps.

Skill #21 Play an Online Game
Solitare-who hasn't? I used to play Hearts years ago and see the children playing coolmath games & Fiesta in our library now. What suggestions do you have? Have you had tournaments in your library?
Our Teen Librarian did Guitar Hero monthly though that's Wii.

Technology-Week 1. Love my iphone

In reviewing, I realized I forgot to do this.
I got it because my son has one and I figure it's time I had another one. He's my teacher. My first cell phone I hardly used so I stopped after my contract was up. My favorite thing is MAPS. I go all over the world traveling on iphone. The notes app worked great at the PLA conference in Portland-easy to send to my boss and myself for future reference. The photos and video features I use alot. I text in a limited way but I understand the social & professional uses more. I'm not addicted as I still like to be tech free on one of my days off.

Tonight, I am playing with "TAGS" as I didn't know and am still learning what they are. So I typed in "kid lit" and some good stuff popped up: SLJ top 100 Children's novels, Mem Fox's site, & Kidlitosphere.

I'm still not getting how they are all connected as they seem to be....?
It took me awhile to find this again.

Where am I?

Week 2: I've done it but feel lost and I don't think I am in control of this. I'll keep checking in to play & see the results.

Newbie Blogger

Salutations! Here is my first blog.
I'm encouraged by the great positive statements on the first video. It reminds me of the positive support you get from someone, cheering you on, saying you can do it, you can do it! Then you have to jump off the diving board and you love the feeling in the air and wish you could float there forever. Quickly, you know you have to hit the water and bob back up. You say, Wow that was easy & fun and you do it over and over again until the fear is gone and replaced with confidence and joy.
Well, I'm at the 'love the feeling in the air' part. How about you?

Kind regards,
Meg
